Has your AC unit started making unusual noises lately? If so, there’s no better time to look into it, particularly if the noise in question is a persistent rattle.
The main problem with rattling sounds is that they’re common indicators of larger issues. If you don’t deal with them on time, they could result in massive repair bills. Of course, this also depends on the source of the rattling.
Not sure where to start with your troubleshooting efforts? Here are some common reasons for your AC unit making rattling noise and what to do about them!
Debris in the Outdoor AC Unit
With plenty of openings on its cover, your outdoor unit is a prime target for debris to fall inside. Some things commonly found inside these units include:
- Dirt
- Leaves
- Twigs
- Rocks
All these objects are capable of causing a rattling AC noise. Though the rattling itself may not be a big issue, the debris causing it is a different story. Oftentimes, it can cause severe damage that may force you to replace the entire unit.
In some cases, there may even be plant growth on or near the unit. If you notice it, trim it back carefully and remove the clippings before they fall into the grille. For best results, don’t allow any plants within three feet of the unit.
As for removing the debris, you can start by spraying the grille with a garden hose. Cleaning the inside is a job best left to the pros. They’ll open the cover and use a special solvent to remove troublesome debris from the fins.
A skilled technician can also ensure that none of the components were damaged by foreign objects. If this was the case, they’ll recommend the best course of action.
Faulty Air Conditioning Motor
Most outdoor AC units come with a fan mounted to a motor. These motors contain bearings that can encounter a variety of issues, such as:
- Wearing out
- Drying out from a lack of maintenance
- Damage from foreign objects entering the unit
If the bearings start to wear out, the motor may make a screeching noise. If the motor shaft is out of balance, however, it can cause some moving parts to become loose. This is one of the more common rattling sound causes.
The best thing to do with a damaged motor is usually to replace it quickly. Otherwise, it could cause damage to other components. Replacing a motor is quick and affordable, but only when performed by a certified HVAC technician.
Damaged AC Fan Blades
The purpose of the fan on the outdoor unit is to move air across the condenser coil. The fan blades are usually made of steel or aluminum. If a blade is loose, it may hit parts of the casing or frame, causing scraping or rattling noises.
Unfortunately, there are plenty of HVAC unit issues that could lead to the fan becoming damaged. Some common examples include:
- Every day wear and tear
- Advanced age of the unit
- Foreign objects falling into the unit
- Improper unit installation or alignment
If a fan blade is damaged, you’ll probably need to replace it. This is another task best left to an experienced technician. They can also confirm that the fan motor shaft isn’t damaged as well, which could spell trouble for the rest of the unit.
Loose Cover Panel
Has your AC unit been opened recently, perhaps by a curious homeowner? If so, there’s a chance that the cover panel wasn’t reinstalled correctly. The panel is held down by machine or self-tapping screws, and they must be tightened correctly.
If this isn’t the case, the fan motor may vibrate too much, causing a consistent rattling noise. This is usually something you can fix yourself. All you need to tighten the screws is either a 1/4” nutdriver or a Phillips tip screwdriver.
Does the unit still make a rattling noise after tightening the cover panel? If so, it’s best to contact a professional technician to take a look at the unit.
Other Potential Issues
Though the above issues are the most common causes of rattling sounds, they’re far from the only ones. Here are a few other potential reasons for rattling.
Small Ductwork
Undersized ductwork can create back pressure that causes your blower motor to work too hard, creating a rattling sound. If this is the case, you may have to either replace most of your ductwork or switch to a ductless system.
Damaged Register
In older homes, heat registers are often made of thin steel or cheap aluminum. As a result, they’re more likely to become damaged over time, creating vibrations or rattling noises. Contact the pros for an air conditioner repair assessment.
Damaged ISO Pads
ISO pads, or vibration isolation pads, are installed under the compressor unit. Their purpose is to reduce the noise and vibration transfer. If these pads are damaged (or missing), the unit will be a lot louder than it needs to be.
Dirty Air Filter
If your air filter traps too much debris, it will cause your blower motor to work too hard. In some cases, this may lead to rattling. The solution is simple: replace the filter, but make sure to pick the right one for your needs.
Unbalanced Motor
Some rattling sounds seem like they’re coming from the ductwork, but they really originate from the furnace unit. This happens when the blower motor sends the air past the air handler and across the A-coil, which creates rattling.
